Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
On a shield 2 inches (5.08 cm) overall in width and 2 3/8 inches (6.03 cm) overall in height per chevron reversed and abased yellow and per pale blue and red, a black mace and a black battle-ax saltirewise all within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) yellow border.

Symbolism
The colors yellow, blue and red are used for principal combat arms elements of an Armored organization.  The crossed mace and battle-ax allude to assault tactics and the shield to defense.  The crossed weapons also simulate the letter X as a reference to the military symbol for brigades.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 13 January 1966.  It was amended to revise the symbolism on 21 September 1979.     (TIOH Dwg. No. A-1-405)

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a black mace with handle to base between three flashes of blue, gold and red from left to right; overall in base an arched golden scroll inscribed with the words THUNDERBOLTS OF BATTLE in black letters.

Symbolism
The colors yellow, blue and red represent the principal combat arms element of an Armored organization.  The mace alludes to the smashing power of Armor and the units participation in the Central European campaign of World War II.  The flashes refer to the motto Thunderbolts of Battle.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 18 March 1966.
